Two donuts

There's a grocery store a block from my office that makes its own raised donuts every day. I try not to eat them every day, but they're always tempting me, calling to me in their siren donut voices. And usually when I cave, I cave big. I have a hard time choosing between chocolate-iced-with-sprinkles and chocolate-cinnamon. So I get both.

And then I eat both.

And then I feel like I just ate too many donuts.

Drizzle drizzle drizzle

The weather is downright bleak today. Wet and cold and gray. David braved the chill to get bacon and croissants and avocado and eggs, with his friend Andrew, and then we made delicious breakfast sandwiches and watched Top Gear. (I absolutely adore that show -- despite the fact that it's all about cars, which generally I'm not all that interested in. I think I like it because (1) it's a bit silly and doesn't take itself too seriously, and (2) when the show's hosts talk about cars, they make driving into a passionate, dramatic experience. It's not at all dry, not incomprehensibly technical. Sometimes it's incomprehensibly British, but that just adds to the charm.)

Now I'm going to brew a fresh cup (or maybe pot) of tea and try out my new video game, Puzzle Bots. I like puzzle-y games, so I have high hopes.

Knitting season

I'm making a hat right now, with a zigzaggy pattern that I penciled out on graph paper. It's coming along amazingly fast, and I'm already thinking about what to knit next. Something about the colder weather really brings out the bug.

Maybe it's because knitted things are just so snuggly. And it's easy to do cuddled into the couch with a blanket over your lap.

I got some fantastic two-stranded black-and-white baby alpaca yarn that I haven't quite decided what do do with. It's so incredibly soft and fuzzy and delicious, and I'd really like to try making a sweater out of it, but (a) I don't have enough for a sweater, and (b) I've never made a sweater. I have to do something with it, though, aside from rub my face on it and snuggle with it when no one's looking. A scarf, maybe, because I can always use another scarf. Except I'm kind of tired of making scarves. Hmmm.

Touring the countryside, one jail at a time

I've seen more of my home state visiting various county jails and courthouses and prisons than I ever would have imagined. And most of us don't have reason to think much about it, but jails and prisons and halfway-houses and group homes are all over. I mean, not just across the state, but down the block and around the corner too.

I got to visit a new jail today and had to speak with my client via video-phone. It seemed unnecessarily high tech. And even though I was never in the physical presence of my client, I still had to lock up my bag and go through the metal detector. Like, what, through the phone I'm going to slip him a cake with an iron file baked into it?

This is why I can never find anything around here

It feels like time for another reblogorganization. One of these days I'll have to put together a complete archive -- I hit the 10-year mark this fall. Of course, there have been some major dry spells in there, but I'm ok with that. And you know, on the internet, nothing ever really dies.
